Well, the biggest element would have to be the different characters that are playable. When the game launched there were 8 different races and you would get to select one. And you can go ahead and customize your character to your desire. You would then be able to get yourself released in the World of Azeroth.
You would be playing with different players all over the world, and join them to enter various dungeons and complete raids. The game was capped with a character level of 65 at the time of the launch, and players all over the world found themselves lost in the attempt to level up and found the game to be fun and challenging.
WOW Expansion list
World of Azeroth has come to life with the number of subscribers reaching three and a half million within a year of the launch. Every other MMORPG was left in the dust, and hence, the game managed to achieve what was considered an impossible task.
Now, let’s move the timeline a little further when the game had almost reached its peak back in 2007. The game had crossed over 8 million subscribers all over the world.
The Blizzard Entertainment company wanted the game interesting and wanted gamers to stay with the game. So, they decided to add new elements to the game which would keep things interesting. And also, the possibility of bringing new people to the game. And so, the expansion was launched.
First, of the many which were to come to keep the game interesting and, the expansion did exactly what the developers had thought it would end up doing. So, this is the point where we move on to the list of expansions that were launched for World of Warcraft. And helping in the expansion of the world of Azeroth to new heights.
1. World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
The first expansion set was launched back in January 2007. The expansion was named the burning crusade, and the expansion allowed the invasion of the demon army into the world of Azeroth.
The demon army uses a portal to enter Azeroth and starts killing the army commanders. The expansion introduced new characters and new gameplay. The design of the races was tweaked and that improved the gameplay even further.
It also brought new dungeons and new raids for the players to take part in. The game started to get more subscribers from all over the world, and also managed to retain the old ones.
The unique thing that made the first expansion so great was the characters that were in the demon army. They were also a part of the original World of Warcraft game which was launched back in 1994 and went on to have sequences launched till 2003. This made the game more familiar to the old fans of the game.
2. World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King
In the second expansion another character from the original game, and the king of the undead army was launched in the game. And players would have to travel to another continent to take on the king. The game was changed further in gameplay and design.
The game was once again rejuvenated, and the number of subscribers increased. And this game broke the record of the fastest-selling record in the 24 hours of the launch which was set by the previous expansion of the game.
The expansion was considered to be the death of the hardcore element of the game. As the game once again started using the new user-friendly gameplay. The game had new elements and the maximum level cap of the characters was once again increased. So, this enabled new weapon upgrades, new costumes were also introduced.
3. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
The game was redesigned almost entirely. The world map was changed. New characters were introduced, and the gameplay was also further improved. The character level cap was also increased further, making upgrades of new weapons go even further.
The expansion, however, was considered one of the worst expansions in the game’s history. The expansion released a lot of negative reviews and the number of subscribers fell for the first time in the history of the game.
4. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria
The introduction of a new continent which was unexplored brought some of the life back into the game. And the expansion added new races and new characters which you can play with. The gameplay was tweaked and the graphics of the game was improved as well.
The game was back on track with the number of subscribers finally starting to go back up a little and hit the 10 million mark once again. But it started to go back down again soon after.
5. World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor
This expansion was expected to return the world of warcraft back to its peak years when the number of subscribers was over 12 million. The world of the warcraft map was once again changed. And almost resembled the original map from the world of warcraft at the time of the launch.
The portal was once again open, and a new invasion was taking place. The players were forced to take on a new enemy to stop the invasion. The game once again started to gain popularity back. And the number of subscribers soon reached the 10 million mark once again.
The expansion introduced new elements and characters. But this time around, the focus of the developers was on the gameplay. So fewer raids and dungeons were introduced compared to previous expansions.
But the dream was short-lived as the expansion was criticized by the hardcore gaming fans which lead to the biggest drop of the game. The number of subscribers that were lost was almost half. And that too was lost in a very short period of time.
6. World of Warcraft: Legion
This was one of the biggest expansions for the game to have ever been launched. With new characters and races introduced.
The gameplay was improved, and a lot of flaws from the previous expansions were fixed and introduced many new raids, and dungeons to the game. The game steadily regained its popularity, and hence, stabilized the World of Warcraft fanbase.
This expansion also saw patch updates become more frequent, and hence, contributing to its success even further. This was one of the most highly rated expansion packs from the world of warcraft, and it was rightly so.
7. World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth
This was the expansion that was focused on improving the PVP and arena modes of the game. This expansion did introduce new gameplay and new weapons, and also raised the character level cap even further.
The expansion also had new raids and dungeons introduced to the game. But the expansion pack was a success in the eyes of the hardcore fanbase as it improved the PVP. And the arena mode is a lot more than all of the other expansions packs.
8. World of Warcraft: Shawdowlands
The expansion was critically highly rated, and the game introduced new continents and new races and characters.
Also, the gameplay was improved and increased the graphics of the game. The expansion is considered to bring back the glory days of the game which were after the launch of the second expansion, and so far, the expansion has pointed that it may be the case.
